Do your kiddos need some extra multiplication facts practice? This no-prep football game, get your children doing just that.

When there is a problem that involves multiplication, singing erupts in my house. Tunes like Jesus Loves Me and if you are Happy and You Know it flow from my second grader’s mouth, while fingers are held in the air to keep track of how many numbers he has sung.

This happens Every. Single. Time.

Though I’m thrilled that my little man can solve multiplication problems, skip counting your way through two-digit multiplication problems is probably not the best way. Though very doable. And I know this because my little man does it.

Some kids may struggle with memorizing multiplication facts, and if skip counting is what helps I’m all for that. But this second grader is already in a fourth-grade math book and has been gifted by God with an incredible memory. He can memorize his multiplication facts but needs a little practice. So for the next few weeks, we will be playing a lot of games to help him be able to spout off his facts as well as he skips counts.

Prep-Work

My son is fascinated with anything football related. He and his brothers spend hours playing football in the yard, and their favorite part of the week is lunchtime on community day. Though lunch is normally eaten on the way home so that the full hour can be spent playing football with their friends.

So my first step on our way to mastering our multiplication steps is a football game with very little prep-work.

  1. First, print off the football field and score sheet on card stock paper.
  2. Next, laminate the score sheet or place in a sheet protector.
  3. Finally, gather up a few items. You will need a dry erase marker, a nine-sided die, a calculator, and a game marker. We used a cool football player.

How To Play:

I’ll be honest. Until I got married and had a whole bunch of boys (well three but sometimes it seems like a whole bunch), I didn’t really watch or pay attention to anything football related. But now, football is on a lot. In fact, even in the offseason, my boys use YouTube to watch football.

Up until recently, I didn’t know all the rules for football and I assume there are numerous kids out there that don’t get it either. So these rules are a very simplified version of football.

  • Player one places his man on the twenty-yard line, rolls two dice and multiplies them together. Player two uses his calculator to check him.
  • Then Player one uses the chart to see how far he may move up and marks first down.

  • This continues three more times until he has reached fourth down.
  • If player one scores in those four downs he receives 7 points.

Then player two gets a turn. I set the timer for 15 minutes and whoever had the most points when the timer went off won. the game.

My boys had a blast, and have begged to play it again and again. And we are getting some great multiplication facts practice in too.

Enjoy!
