There is one thing I’ve learned while teaching, no two children learn the same way and they definitely don’t learn at the same pace.

My little girl has proven that again and again. And I’ve had to be very creative in the ways I teach her.

We are working hard on learning our letters using This Reading Mama’s Reading the Alphabet and All About Spelling. Reading the Alphabet is helping her learn a few sight words, begin to understand the concepts of print. and get in some extra learning like rhyming. In All About Spelling, we are working hard to memorize the sounds of each letter. It amazes me how much she can memorize, so we are focusing on this and hoping it all comes together with all the interactive learning All About Spelling provides.

But for math, besides Reading Eggs, I don’t have much for us to work on. We have been using number clip cards, so this week I created something else for her to work on one-to-one correspondence as well as number recognition. And these preschool counting activities are a simple activity that works on both of these concepts.

Prep- Work

Seriously, there is almost no prep-work….my favorite type of activity.

  1. First, print off the pages.
  2. Next, gather up a cookie sheet and magnetic number.
  3. Finally, round up your preschooler or preschoolers….and you are ready to go.

Once everything is printed off, it is easy sailing.

Simply put the paper on the cookie sheet, and then have the children begin to count the objects on the worksheet. Once they have figured out how many items are in that group, they find the magnetic number that corresponds with that set and then places it on that set.

The kiddos then move on to the next set until they have figured out how many objects are in each set, and found the number that matches that.

There are four different sets:

  1. Ten frames
  2. Numbers in word form
  3. Counting Apples
  4. Counting crayons

My twins have loved this simple activity. My boy twin can recognize the sets with 1, 2, 3,  and 4 without counting, and I loved watching him practice his one-to-one correspondence as he got into the sevens, eights, and nines. We still have a long way to go with my little girl, but we will get there.
