Need some elapsed time word problems? These 12 monster themed problems will get children working through this concept using a number line!

Alright, this is one concept we use all the time.

What time do I need to leave to get there by seven?

It takes 15 minutes to get there, and it is now 6:40. Am I going to be late?

And my kids favorite….we are supposed to be there at 5:45 and it is 5:35. How much time do we have left in the car?

We use elapsed time daily in our lives, and providing our children with real-life word problems are important. And that is what these elapsed time word problems do.

Prep – Work

With a little cutting, this center is ready to be used.

  1. First, print off the word problems on card stock paper.
  2. You can laminate them and punch a hole in the top with a binder to make the center last numerous years.
  3. Next, laminate the recording sheet and the number lines.
  4. Finally, grab some dry erase markers and you are ready to go.

Elapsed Time Word Problems

Once everything is ready. It is time for a little problem-solving. I love using number lines to solve the word problems because getting past the hour mark is a lot easier. But you could skip the number lines and use a clock with moveable arms.

If you choose to use the number lines, here is what it could look like. Remember you can use any increments you like, this is just an example.

Example One:

In this example, we start at a quarter till 3. So, on our number line, we are going to write 2:45.

Next, we see that she was waited for 20 minutes to see the doctor. So on our number line, we are going to use increments of five to go up till we get to 20 minutes.

We will write, 2:45, 2:50, 2:55, 3:00, 3:05, 3:10 etc.

Now, all we have to do is move up 20 minutes.

And as you can see we land at 3:05. Sally saw the doctor at 3:05.

Example 2:

This word problem is a little different. We are given two times, and we have to figure the time in-between. So we are going to start at 5:40 and we can go up five or ten-minute increment. I choose five since that was easier.

5:40, 5:45, 5:50, 5:55, 6:00, 6:05, 6:10, 6:15, 6:20, 6:25

Now, all we have to do is count by fives and we jump along the line….and we can see that nine jumps will equal forty-five minutes.
