My little ones are so excited about Christmas. Decorating the Christmas tree was our first step in getting ready for Christmas.

Each year, my mom buys them an ornament that shows what they are interested in at that time. They have a blast finding their ornaments and hanging them on the tree….sometimes all in one large bunch!!

With the love of decorating the Christmas tree so evident, I decided to create a decorate the Christmas tree activity for my twins.

My boy has one to one correspondence down and is even adding simple numbers, but my little girl is still struggling with number recognition, counting, and one to one correspondence. Fine motor skills are really not her strong suit either, so this activity was designed for her and allowed her to practice all of these crucial skills.

And she loved this counting activity for preschoolers.

Prep-Work

This activity will take you just a few minutes to prep, and then you will be ready to go.

  1. First, print off the Christmas tree and the number cards.
  2. Next, cut out the number cards and place them in learning cubes.
  3. Grab some pom poms and fine motor tweezers and you are ready to go.

Counting Activity For Preschoolers

Once all the prep work was done, I showed my little girl what we were doing and with a bounce in her step, she joined me on the floor.

To begin, I had her roll the large die….I don’t know what is so fun about that, but she loved it!!

Next, I had her say the number she rolled. If she said the wrong number, I helped her trace the number with her finger while saying the number over and over.

Then, we counted the ornaments in the ten frame. I want her to be able to know what five looks like in a ten frame and so this step help her see five and practice one to one correspondence.

Finally, it was time for the fine motor skills and a little more counting and one to one correspondence. Using the twizzers, I had her pick up the pom-poms and place them on the tree. We counted each pom poms allowed as she did this. Then when she was finished we went back and recounted the pom poms to make sure we had the right number.

Extension:

My little boy joined me, and in all honesty, he has already mastered these skills. So I decided to challenge him a little. I asked him to only use two colors while “decorating” the tree.

Then we practiced making addition number sentences.

You put on two reds and four greens….so 2 + 4 = 6.

My twins and I had a lot of fun with this, and I hope you enjoy this counting activity for preschoolers too.
