Grab these free Christmas word problems that are hands-on and focus on multiple addends with sums up to 20. Children get to “decorate” a tree with pom poms to solve the problems.

This year my Christmas tree is no shape or form looks like a designer tree. The kids pretty much decorated it themselves, and have continued to “decorate” it as they search for their favorite ornaments.

I’ve even found a stuffed animal sitting on the branches of the tree.

And to top it off there is a needle-like leaf sticking out of our artificial tree. (They were very proud that they could identify a needle-like leaf and thought it matched our tree!!!)

My tree may not be picture worthy, but it is well loved.

My children have loved decorating it, so I decided to create some Christmas word problems. They all focus on decorating the tree, have multiple addends, but only have sums up to 20.

Prep-Work

With just a little cutting, these Christmas word problems will be ready to use.

  1. First, print off all the pages. If using this as a center you will need one record sheet per child in your class. But only print off enough Christmas trees and word problems for the children that will be at the center.
  2. Next, cut out the word problems and place them on a ring.
  3. Finally, provide pom poms, tweezers for fine motor skill work, and pencils.

And you are ready to go.

Christmas Word Problems

Now it is time for a little problem-solving. Some of the problems are very simple, like this one.

The problem tells us that Dan put on three red ornaments, one blue ornament, and one green ornament. Then we are asked how many ornaments are on the tree altogether.

All that our sweet little ones need to do is put three red pom poms, one blue pom poms, and one green pom pom on the tree and count up how many pom poms they see. The answer is 5.

Missing Addend

But this one is a little harder. It has a missing addend. We know that there are 15 ornaments on the tree. There are seven red and six yellow. So the children begin by placing those amounts on the tree.

Next, the children count up how many ornaments are on the tree. 7 + 6 = 13 and count up from 13 placing a green ornament on with each count.

“14….15”

Now we can see that we have 15 ornaments on the tree and two of them are green. The answer is 2.

Word problems help our children use math in real life situations….and I hope these Christmas word problems strengthen your children’s skills while they have fun!

You’ve Got This,

Rachel
