Valentine’s Day is on the horizon and soon we would be flooded with sweets galore. This year, we have started Trim Healthy Mama and I have been trying to do NO sugar, and greatly limiting the sweets my kids get. They have so many “sweet” recipes that use sugar like stevia, that my kiddos don’t feel deprived.

But I know that in the next week sweets will be coming in from friends and even grandparents….. and there will be a lot to resist.

Well, this game has kids adding fractions and mixed numbers while filling up grids on cupcakes. A yummy treat that won’t add pounds!!!

Prep-Work

Adding Fractions and Mixed Numbers game is very easy to prep.

  1. First, print off one game board and enough cupcake boards and record sheets for each player.
  2. Next, laminate the cupcake boards.
  3. Finally, provide dry erase markers, game piece, and a die.

Adding Fractions and Mixed Numbers:

This game is easy to play and is the perfect way to introduce adding fractions and mixed numbers.

  1. To begin, the players place their game piece anywhere on the game board. On their first turn, the role the die and record the fraction that they landed on, on the recording sheet. They also color in that fraction on the cupcake models. (They may have to find the equivalent fraction. For example, if they roll 1/4 they must change it to 2/8 as there are eight equal squares on the model.

2. The next time it is there turn they roll, again and add that fraction to their record sheet and to their cupcakes.

3. The first person that gets to six wholes, wins the game.

As you can see in this example, the player has gotten to 1 6/8 or 1/ 3/4 on their last turn. They have written out an equation for what they are adding and have modeled it on their sheet.

On this turn, they landed on the fraction five-eights. This student already has one and six-eights colored in so that becomes the first number in their equation.

Next, they write five-eights because that is what they are adding.

Now they color in five-eights on the models.

Finally, they figure the total. They have filled in two whole cupcakes, and three out of the eight squares on the third one. So the answer is 2 3/8.

I hope your children enjoy this fun game!!!
