Comparing Three-Digit Numbers

There are numerous reasons for learning to compare numbers. Obviously, it is good to know that $398 dollars is more than $309 dollars.

But comparing numbers also helps builds number sense. It helps children analyze the place value of numbers and learn what digits represent. If your child struggles with completing these cards, then it is a sign that they truly don’t understand place value.

One way to combat that is to get out the base ten blocks and have the children build each number.

In this example, a child would begin by getting out 9 flats to represent the 900. Next, they would skip getting out the tens or longs, because there are zero tens. Finally, they would get out two cubes.

Then it would be time to move on to the next number. Once again they would need to get out nine flats, but this time they would need to get two tens or longs out. There aren’t any ones so no cubes are needed.

Now it is time to compare. And it is easy to see that the second number we built is larger than the first. And all that is left to do, is place the less than sign in the blank. 902 is less than 920 or 902 < 920.

If you unsure how to teach and develop place value in your student’s, this class may be for you. It has 30 scripted lessons for K – 2nd grade, that focus on Building Number Sense through hundreds charts, base ten blocks, number lines, and decomposing numbers.
