FREE Easter Egg Subtracting With Regrouping Activity

My second grader has come to a stopping point in his math book. We have hit the dreaded subtraction with regrouping.

We have explored this concept with base ten blocks, hundreds charts, and I have taught him different methods. But now it is just time to practice.

And I wanted him to have a little fun with it.

So today, he gets to put together easter egg puzzles as he solves subtraction with regrouping problems.

Prep-Work

Puzzles all require a little prep-work. But store them in an accordion file with similar math skills, and they are ready for the next year or review time.

First, print off the pages you want to use on card stock paper.
Next, cut them out and then laminate them.
And you are ready to go!!!!

Subtracting with Regrouping Activity

Now it is time to get down to work.

As I mentioned before, hopefully, a lot of subtraction work has gone on before you’ve reached this point. It is very important for children to play with this idea and explore before being asked to do numerous problems.

I”m a firm believer in teaching children numerous ways to solve a problem, and then letting them choose which way works best for them.

I’ve taught both of my boy’s trade-first subtraction (traditional method) and the partial difference method. One prefers the traditional way, and the other prefers the partial difference way. And that is fine. As long as they are getting the right answer, and UNDERSTAND what they are doing and why each way works, how they solve the problem is not important.
