TWO Multiplying Fractions Activities Using Google Slides

These multiplying fractions activities using digital slides are based on the book “The Lion’s Share”. Using cake fractions the children will figure out what 1/2 of a fraction is. Next, they will be show cakes and asked to solve a problem like what is 1/3 of 2 cakes.

It is time for another exploring fractions through Read-A- Louds and Digital Slides.

I have to admit this has been one of my favorite series. I love the books I have read, and the Google Slides are a fun way to explore fractions.

Well, today’s lesson is a little harder. Today we have some fun multiplying fractions activities that will introduce this new concept.

Prep-Work For Multiplying Fractions Activities

There are only two things you need to do to get ready for this lesson.

  1. First, grab the book “The Lion’s Share”. It is a delightful book that teaches about manners and sharing, but also drives in the point that when we multiply using fractions we get a smaller number.
  2. Next, make sure you save the google slides. I can not give you permission to edit the slides. If I do, everyone that has the link will be able to see your work.

Multiplying Fractions by One-Half

This first set of slides allows children to half slices of cake themselves. It is a simple activity, and I show you how to do it in this video.

Multiplying Whole Numbers by Fractions

The next set of Google Slides still has children working with cake, but this time they are multiplying a whole number by a fraction.

As this is an introduction to multiplying fractions by whole numbers, the cakes are provided for them and all they have to do is count out how many slices.

In this example, the students are asked what is 1/6 of 2.

As you can see in the picture, there are two 1/6 pieces. That means the answer is 2/6.

But you may notice, that there is another equal sign which means the fraction can be simplified. 2/6 divided by 2/2 = 1/3. So the answer is 1/3.

I hope you enjoy this intro to multiplying fractions and developing a better understanding of fractions.
