Today is the third installment of building fraction sense with a book and google slides. I’m loving this series. It is so much fun to find books that talk about fractions and then provide opportunities to practice the new skills digitally.

Whole-y Cow: Fractions are Fun

Our book to read today is “Whole-y Cow: Fractions are Fun”. It is a delightful book about a cow that decides to have a different day. He goes swimming in a patriotic swimsuit that is 1/3 blue, 1/3 red, and 1/3 white. And he catches butterflies that are 1/2 blue and 1/2 purple.

It is a fun way to help our children see fractions in a different way. Many times we introduce fractions as pies and pizza, but this shows that fractions don’t always have to be shown that way.

As always, I recommend reading the book to your kids or students, but if needed….you can watch it here on YouTube.

Making Fractions Time:

After reading, it is time to jump into some practice.

These Google slides are based on the part of the book where the cow catches butterflies. The children get to practice making fractions by looking at butterflies. Making Fractions: Read a Loud and Digital Resource to Introduce Fractions

In this example, the children figure out what fraction of the butterflies are blue. There are seven butterflies, so the denominator is seven. There are two butterflies, so the numerator is 2. The fraction of butterflies that are blue is 2/7.

Next we figure out what fraction of the butterflies are red. The denominator is once again seven, but now the numerator is 5….since there are five red butterflies. The fraction of butterflies that are red is 5/7.

Word Problems:

If you want to take a step further, then jump into these word problems. You have the option of a printable option, or you can have your children work them out digitally. It is a great way to extend this lesson, and really build fraction sense!!!
