FREE Challenging Christmas Multiplication and Division Word Problems
Grab these FREE multiplication and division word problems for an extra Christmas challenge. These problems have children solving multi-digit problems. (1,345/45 or 23 x 45)
Let’s just face the facts. The last few days before school is out for Christmas break are tough. Technically, you are supposed to be doing learning activities, but all the kids are thinking about (and you for that matter) is the upcoming holiday.
So today, I have a challenging activity that will take some time, make children review their math skills, but have fun at the same time.
Check out these multiplication and division word problems.
Multiplication and Division Word Problems:
So these problems can be simple one-step problems like this one.
The word problem just asks how many days it will take the elves to make a certain amount of presents. All that the kiddos are required to do is divide 13,064 by 23 and they get the answer 568. Though the math can be challenging, figuring out to do with the word problem is pretty cut and dry.
A Little Harder
But others look more like this.
There are other ways to solve, but here is just one example of what needs to happen.
First, we want to work in the same unit. I know that Garland has used 200 cups, so I’m going to figure out how many cups are in 15 gallons. ( I don’t want to deal with fractions and decimals so I’m going to cups….but if your kiddo wants to do that. By all means, let them give it a try.)
15 x 16 = 240
Now, I need to figure out how many cups of paint are left. 240 – 200 = 40.
But, if you notice, the question asks for gallons…..so a little division is needed. There are 16 cups in one gallon, so I get to divide 40 by 16 and I get 2 with a remainder of 8 cups.
So I can say that Tiny has 2 1/2 gallons of paint left, or that he has 2 gallons and 8 cups of paint left. Don’t except an answer of 2 r8. You want our big kiddos to know what that remainder represents and how to use that in their answer.
Ideas for Using:
If you want to make these last days a little more fun, here are some ideas on how to use the cards.
- One easy way to use is just to put them in a math center and let three or four children work through them.
- You could make a classroom walk. Stick tape on the word problems, and have the children walk around with a partner, whiteboard. and their answer sheet. In the end, you could take it as a grade, or just go over the answers.
- Set up 10 centers with long bulletin board paper at each place. Divide the kids into 10 groups. Have them solve the problems on the paper (each group must show their own work.) They can also write appropriate comments next to other teams works.
“I like how you solved this problem.”
“I’m not sure this answer is correct. Did you make a mistake in your division here?”
I hope these multiplication and division word problems challenge your children while helping you survive these last few days!
