Free Subtract 2 Digit Numbers with Regrouping Worksheet | 300+ Problems

Subtraction is a fundamental operation in mathematics. For kids in grades 1 to grade 3, the process of subtraction might seem more challenging than any other task. So, it is necessary to make the subtraction learning processes more entertaining and engaging. For your children in grades 1 through grade 3, you can find a worksheet to subtract 2 digit numbers with regrouping in this article.

But, if you choose to utilize these worksheets, you can also use them with children in grade 4 or grade 5 to subtract 2 digit numbers with regrouping.

These exercises are centered on subtraction-related issues. Students must determine the right answer to the subtraction problems. They will be assisted in understanding the entire process by teachers or parents.

A new term is introduced here for the students and it is regrouping. Sometimes you can face a problem in multi-digit subtraction that you cannot subtract the number from the minuend as the minuend is less than the number.

You should know that the minuend is the number from which you will subtract a number. However, a subtrahend is a number that you subtract from the minuend. When you face the problem mentioned in the first lines of the last paragraph, you need to borrow a 1 from the tens place of the subtrahend.

This 1 is added with the minuend as 10 and then you can easily subtract the subtrahend from the minuend. This particular work is called regrouping. Subtraction of 2 digit numbers with regrouping

Subtraction with Regrouping

From the former section, you have come to know the basic idea of regrouping. Now, in this portion, I will show how we can apply this regrouping idea practically. Let’s assume a problem here.

Problem: 82-18=? Let’s find the solution step by step.

Solution:

Step 1: First, write down the problem vertically. The upper number will be the greater one and is called minuend and the lower number is the subtrahend.

Step 2: Now start the subtraction. First, subtract the one’s place numbers. But it is impossible to subtract 8 from 2. So, borrow 1 as 10 from 1 adjacent to the 8. Add the 10 with 2. Now it becomes possible to subtract 8 from 12.

Step 3: You will get 4 as a result of this first subtraction.

Step 4: Now, subtract the borrowed 1 from the 8 of the minuend. You will get 7.

Step 5: Subtract the subtrahend 1 from the new minuend 7. You will get the result 6.

Step 6: So the subtraction result is 64.

9 Exciting Activities to Subtract 2 Digit Numbers with Regrouping

These worksheets to subtract 2 digit numbers with regrouping in pdf format can help our children learn the basics of mathematics fast and actively. These techniques work really well. These methods should aid your young champion in laying a solid foundation by introducing them to the basic concepts of mathematical operation learning. For the worksheets to subtract 2 digit numbers with regrouping, follow the detailed directions listed below.

Subtract 2 Digit Numbers from 2 Digit Numbers with Regrouping

This is the basic activity of this article. The method to subtract 2 digit numbers with regrouping is explained broadly in the second paragraph of this article. Simply follow the steps one by one. For more examples and exercises, download and open the pdf attached to this article.

Subtract 2 Digit Numbers from 3 Digit Numbers with Regrouping

Now, this activity is quite trickier than the first activity. You need to subtract 2 digit numbers from 3-digit numbers here. Let’s assume a problem and solve it step by step for your convenience.

Problem: Solve this subtraction 364-59=?

Solution:

Step 1: After writing down the numbers vertically, start the subtraction from the one’s place. As you can see, 9 cannot be subtracted from 4. So, borrow 1 as 10 from 5 and add with 5.

Step 2: Now, subtract  9 from 14. You will get 5.

Step 3: Then, the borrowed 1 will be subtracted from 6 and it will become 5.

Step 4: After that, subtract 5 from 5. You will get 0.

Step 5: As there is no other carry, write down the 3 in the result.

Step 6: So, the final result is 305.

2 Digit Subtraction Word Problems

The subtraction problems become tougher when students get a word problem to subtract 2 digit numbers with regrouping. You should become a bit careful when you deal with word problems. Let’s assume a problem and make a solution to it step by step.

Problem: A farmer had 41 apples. He sold 22. How many are left?

Solution:

Step 1: Extract the numbers from the word problems properly. Here, you need to subtract 22 from 41 to get the left apples. So, take 41 as minuend and write it at the top of 22.

Step 2: Here, take 22 as a subtrahend.

Step 3: Now subtract 2 from 1 by using regrouping. You will get 9.

Step 4: Subtract the carry 1 from 4. Then subtract the 2 from 3.

Step 5: the final result will be 19.

2 Digit Subtraction Mixed Worksheets

In this activity, you will get some problems with or without regrouping. The regrouping procedure is explained earlier. All the problems are 2-digit problems here. Here you will find 2-digit subtraction problems without regrouping. The problems without regrouping are easier than the problems with regrouping. These are the basic subtraction problems. You can check the last paragraph of this article to get 2-digit subtraction problems without regrouping.

Find the Missing Numbers in 2 Digit Subtraction with Regrouping

Here, let’s consider three problems to find three types of missing numbers.

Problem:

  1. 54-36=__8
  2. 58-3__=19
  3. 5__-34=18

Solutions:

  1. The first one is similar to the other problems you have studied in this article in the former paragraphs. Simply subtract 36 from 54 and get the result. Consider regrouping if needed. The result of the subtraction is 18. So the number for the blank is 1.
  2. Here, you need to find the subtrahend to fill in the blank. To get it, subtract the result from the minuend. You will find the subtrahend then. So the subtraction result is 39. So, the number to fill in the blank is 9.
  3. In this part, you need to find the minuend. The interesting part is, to get the minuend you need to add the subtrahend and the result. So the sum of the subtrahend and result is 52. So the number to fill in the blank is 2.

2 digit subtraction is a basic subtraction process. Follow the steps one by one and solve the following problem.

Problem: 56-23=?

Solution:

Step 1: First, write down the problems vertically. The 56 will be the minuend and the 23 will be the subtrahend.

Step 2: Start the subtraction from one’s place. Subtract 3 from 6. You will get the answer 3.

Step 3: then continue subtraction in the ten’s place. Subtract 2 from 5 and get the result 3.

Step 4: Lastly, you will get the result of subtraction = 33.
