We have sung our way through skip counting this year. Over and over we have sung each number up to the 15’s. We have sung it together, listened to them in the car, and I’ve asked them to recite this list of numbers individually.

My kiddos don’t mind those first two options…..but the last is not their favorite. But I’ll be honest. I want to be able to assess their knowledge of skip counting.

So my next two days of skip counting activities focus on fun ways to assess our children and to see if they are able to skip count.

Today we get to focus on clip cards!

AND you can check out my other skip counting activities here!

Prep-Work for Skip Counting Clip Cards

With just a little cutting these clip cards are ready to use and can be used over and over again to practice skip counting.

  1. First, print off the skip counting clip cards on card stock paper.
  2. Next, cut out.
  3. Then laminate if you would like a little extra durability.
  4. Finally, gather up some clothespins and you are ready to go.

How to Use:

Beginner’s Option

These clip cards are a great independent activity. And you can make it easier or harder depending on how you hand them out.

If your child is new to skip counting, then you may want to focus on just one set at a time.

Each page has four clip cards on them, and they all represent skip counting for one number. I recommend only given them four cards at a time, and help them by telling them to skip count by a certain number, 6’s in this example.

This way the children know what to expect and can practice just saying, “Six, twelve, eighteen. Ahh, the answer is eighteen.”

More Advanced Option

My boys have been skip counting since kindergarten. With one in second grade, he is pretty familiar with the patterns that can be found when skip counting.

Handing him four clip cards and telling him which number to skip count by would be quite easy for him.

When we do this activity, he will be getting numerous clip cards and I won’t be telling him anything.

Why do this????

  1. I want him to be able to recognize the patterns and figure out which number the card is skip counting by.
  2. Then, I want him to be able to find the missing number.

By doing it this way, he will be recognizing multiples of a number even if he doesn’t realize he is doing it. And of course, I will be able to assess his skip counting skills too.

I hope your children enjoy this way of practicing their skip counting.
