Math Mammoth: An Affordable Homeschool Math Program
Math Mammoth is an affordable math program that has a wonderful focus on place value. As children work through math problems they learn more about place value through modeling, number lines, and area models.
I have a math curriculum I love. It is like an old comfy sweater, that I really don’t want to replace…but it may be time. You see, they don’t sell to homeschoolers. So for the past few years, I’ve searched eBay looking for used books that are still useable.
But here’s the problem. My son has finished his math book and is ready for the next level….but right now there isn’t one for us to get.
Also, you guys are always asking for a good math curriculum. And since I can’t say, “Go search eBay till you find all the parts…even though you really don’t know what you are looking for!” …. I need a math curriculum I can use and like enough to recommend to you.
So today I’m shedding my worn sweater, to tell you about a recent discovery that is perfect for homeschoolers.
*I was financially compensated for this post. The opinions are completely my own based on my experience.*

Math Mammoth: An Affordable Homeschool Math Program
I’m a math curriculum snob. I have very high standards and it doesn’t matter if a curriculum is cheap…..if it doesn’t meet my standards I’m not going to use it.
If you have read much of my blog, you know I firmly believe in not teaching math just through formulas. I want my kiddos working on number lines, drawing models, using place value to solve problems and use numerous skills when solving word problems.
Math Mammoth has actually met my standards. So I finally have a math curriculum that I can recommend! And I can’t wait to show you exactly how they have done this!
The examples shown are from a fourth-grade book! But Math Mammoth has a curriculum for first grade all the way to seventh grade.
Geometry:
The geometry unit begins with area, and it is challenging. Children aren’t just finding the area of rectangles. they are dividing rectangles up, subtracting area, finding areas of odd shapes, and so much more.
As my little man and I worked through these pages, here are a few things we did.
- Distributive property
- Subtraction with regrouping
- Partial Products Multiplication
- Drawing models and finding the area of it.
It was so much fun….and I’m not being sarcastic!! I loved all the thinking my little man was doing.
Multiplying:
I love it when children learn more than one way of solving a problem. The traditional way may not work for everyone, so it is important that children learn other ways to conquer the problem.
Math Mammoth Light Blue Series does this. Not only do you have the opportunity to present multiplication in the traditional way, but the option to teach it using place value and models is also provided! My son prefers using partial products to solve multiplication, which is exactly what is being taught here.
Also, the area models are very similar to what we did when learning area, so a great connection was made!
Division:
Math links together! We see this with decimals and fractions, but did you know this relationship can also be seen with fractions and division. Math Mammoth Light Blue Series does a fantastic job of helping children see the relationships between different concepts. As division is being introduced, Math Mammoth Light Blue Series activates fraction knowledge.
Add in the models and drawings shown here, and I’m a happy camper.
Decimals:
Number lines and models! They just make me smile. Children need to visual math. Some of our kiddos will never understand a concept until it is drawn out for them
As our little ones color and label, a deep understanding is developed. And once again Math Mammoth hits the nail on the head with decimals. The decimal unit is filled with number lines and models that will stretch our kiddos thinking!
FREE STUFF:
I get that jumping into any new curriculum is a little scary.
And there are so many questions:
What if I don’t like it?
Is my child really ready for that grade level?
I love that Math Mammoth has provided some free stuff so you know for sure that you are making the right choices.
To help you make the best-informed decision they have some pretty awesome free downloads available to you.
- FREE samples & worksheets from Math Mammoth books
- THREE FREE Math Mammoth books
- TONS more free math worksheets
- FREE assessment tests
I have to admit….the last one is my favorite. WIth these assessment test, I can be certain that I’m getting the level that will best benefit my child. And we know that is important. We don’t want a bored child any more than we want a child that is in over their heads.
So if you are looking for a math curriculum that focuses not just on solving a formula, Math Mammoth may be the perfect fit for you and your child.
