In Georgia, the state shuts down when it snows. It doesn’t happen that much, and so we just aren’t prepared drive on the roads when it does.

Snow means staying at home and enjoying a day off….unless you are homeschooled and then it is a school day just like any other day!

Today, I’m sharing  “Don’t Get Stuck in the Snow”. It’s a subtraction with regrouping game with a little bit of a winter theme.

Before the Game:

This game is simply for practice. There isn’t anything special about it, except that it is a lot more fun to practice in a game than on a worksheet.

In other words, this isn’t a teaching game. You will want to do some hands-on lessons with subtracting and regrouping before you head into the game.

I love this bundle that helps children use base ten blocks to visualize what is happening when you subtract and have to regroup.

Prep – Work

Once the teaching is done, it is time for the game…..and one of the best parts of this game is that it is an easy one to prep.

Simply, print off the pages.

Then, gather up some game markers, a dice, and a calculator and you are ready to go.

There isn’t anything complicated about this game!

  1. Player one rolls the die and then moves that many spaces. If he/she lands in a snow drift they are stuck and have to go back to the START space. But if the land on a problem, they get to solve it. Player two solves it too using the calculator. If player one, get the answer correct then he gets to stay in that spot. If he did the calculations wrong, then he/she must move back two spaces.

  1. Now it is player two’s turn. And the exact same steps are followed.
  2. The players keep taking turns until one lands on the “finish” space. They are the winner.

I hope your children enjoy getting in some extra math practice in a game form!!
