Power of 10: Definition with Examples

Though this article is about multiplying and dividing by powers of 10 worksheet, let’s start with some things that we already know. First, multiplying 10 by itself a certain number of times, we can call it powers of 10.

Powers of 10

Now look at the image, the size of each equation is ten times the size of the previous equation. Right? Also, the number of zeros in each equation is the same as in the number of tens multiplied together.

Base and Exponent of Power of 10

The second one is about base and exponent. A power of 10 consists of a base and an exponent, which are represented below:

Lesson and Tricks on Multiplying and Dividing by Powers of 10

  • Multiplying by powers of 10, simply move the decimal to the right as the same number of exponents or as the number of zeros.

 Example:

47 x 10²  = 47 x 10 x 10 = 4700

5.4 x 10³ = 5.4 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 5400

  • Dividing by powers of 10, simply move the decimal to the left as the same number of exponents or as the number of zeros.

 Example:

47 ÷ 10²  = 47 ÷ ( 10 x 10 ) = 0.47

5.4 ÷ 10³ = 5.4 ÷ ( 10 x 10 x 10 ) = 5.4 ÷ 1000= 0.0054

So, here is the worksheet and solution for multiplying decimal numbers by powers of 10.

And, this worksheet is for dividing decimal numbers by powers of 10. Don’t forget about the solution. The solution is attached after the worksheet page.

Multiplying and Dividing Fractions by Powers of 10

Just an extra step to do for fractions here. I will show you the process simply. At first, you have to convert the fraction number to a decimal number. Then just follow multiplying and dividing decimal numbers by powers of 10.

Example:

1/2 x 10²  = 0.5 x 10² = 50

1/2 ÷ 10²  = 0.5 ÷ 10² = 0.005

Here you have to fill in all the blanks in the worksheet. This worksheet is about multiplying fractions by powers of 10.

This worksheet is about dividing fractions by powers of 10 for your little ones. The worksheet has been divided into three segments are also here for practice.

Multiplying and Dividing Mixed Numbers by Powers of 10

The process of multiplying and dividing mixed numbers by powers of 10 is similar to the above process. At first, you just have to convert the mixed number to a fraction number. Then, fraction number to decimal number. And finally, just follow multiplying and dividing decimal numbers by powers of 10.

Mixed number multiplying and dividing by powers of 10

And here is the worksheet on dividing mixed numbers by powers of 10 given for your kiddos.

Multiplying and Dividing by Negative Powers of 10

In the following worksheet, multiplying and dividing by negative powers of 10 is added. Mainly the exponent or the power will be negative here. Go to our first worksheet section. For negative power, you just have to move the decimal to the alternative side.

For multiplying – move the decimal to the left

and For dividing- move the decimal to the right.

  • Multiplying by negative powers of 10, simply move the decimal to the left as the same number of exponents or as the number of zeros.

 Example:

23 x 10‾²  = 23 ÷ 10² = 23 ÷ (10 x 10) = 0.23

3.4 x 10‾³ = 3.4 ÷ 10³ = 5.4 ÷ (10 x 10 x 10) = 0.0034

  • Dividing by negative powers of 10, simply move the decimal to the right as the same number of exponents or as the number of zeros.

 Example:

23 ÷ 10‾²  = 23 x 10² = 23 x (10 x 10) = 2300

3.4 ÷ 10‾³ = 3.4 x 10³ = 5.4 x (10 x 10 x 10) = 3400

So, Here is a worksheet and solution for multiplying by negative powers of 10.

Our final worksheet about dividing by negative powers of 10 with the solution is given here.
