Over the past few weeks, I’ve been creating different activities using the hundreds chart. The hundreds chart is a wonderful way to build number sense and help children understand place value a little better.

You can check out our hundreds chart cut and paste.

SO today here is another activity using the hundreds chart. (Though this hundreds chart is a little different so the children can round correctly.)

Pre-Work

Clip cards require a little cutting, but after that you have an activity that is much more fun that a worksheet.

  1. First, print off the clip cards and laminate if you want extra durability.
  2.  Then print off the hundreds chart.
  3. Finally, gather up some clothespins and you are ready to go.

How to Practice Rounding by 10

Hundreds chart in the hundreds:

The first chart starts zero and goes all the way to 210. This chart allows children to practice rounding two-digit numbers and then three-digit numbers.

In the example above, the child gets to round 83. The first step is to find 83 on the hundreds chart and then figure out what happens when you round by 10. The colored hundreds chart makes this very easy.

In this case, 83 is pink. So the student can visually see that when we round 83 to the nearest 10, the answer will be 80.

Many kiddos have a very hard time rounding to 10 when the hundreds place changes to.

There are numerous clip cards in the download that have the children rounding when the hundreds place changes. This will give them more opportunities to use a manipulative (the hundreds chart) to see this change.

Hundreds chart in the thousand

The next chart jumps to the thousands. This helps children work on finding the 10’s place. Next, they get to round to 10 and once again the hundreds chart help them.

In this example, the clip card asks our little ones round 1,098 to the nearest 10. Once they find 1,098 on the chart they can see that it is blue. And when they run their finger down the line they can see that 1,098 rounded the nearest 10 is 1,100.

Just teaching rounding rules may not make sense to some of our kiddos. But when we provide them with clear visuals, the rules begin to make sense.

I hope these help your students see exactly what is happening when they round.

Once they are successful with the clip cards, this assessment may be the next step!
